It’s a magical book club! When this group chooses a book, magic happens. The mystery comes to life, and they find themselves part of the story. To exit the book and get back home, they need to solve the mystery and reach The End.
This time, the club chooses a book called The Great Cake Rivalry, because, well … cake! They read the back cover and it’s unanimous. So off they go into another grand adventure into a town aptly named Frosting.
Frosting is a rural town in an idyllic setting. The people live quiet lives most of the year. But in the spring, things change. The Annual Cake Competition becomes the focus of every man, woman, and child. They take this competition seriously. The cakes are spectacular. The festival is fabulous. For a week there are contests featuring all kinds of cakes. The people of the community become official tasters and vote for the winning cakes in each category.
The grand finale is a display of finely decorated cakes, made by the town’s bakeries. The winner of the best design receives a prize package that would make any baker dizzy.
Sadly, this event has been tainted. Once a year, each one different, but all somehow related to this event, a person is murdered. The main investigator is stumped, but that could be because he’s an inept buffoon.
Can the book club help the people of this community figure out who is causing this disturbing pattern of deaths, and stop another murder from happening? Can they figure out why some of the citizens dress so oddly, and why they always wear those unique backpacks? All while they fill themselves to the brim with cake, of course.

The Murderer Defends Their Actions
By Elizabeth Pantley
Author of the Magical Mystery Book Club series
It’s nice of you to allow me to present my side of the story. That rarely happens, though I think it should, as we often have good reasons for our actions. People like me don’t always set out to kill someone. It’s often a process of circumstance. And as in my case, perfectly understandable.
Many years ago, I moved to a small town. It was a fine place to live. That was way back when it was called Lake Pleasant, since it was pleasant enough. Back in those days, folks began to hold cake events. It was entertaining. A little festival where people baked nice, normal, everyday cakes. And people ate the cakes. It was a couple of days a year when I’d grin and bear it, then it was over.
But over the years it became more and more competitive. The bakeries got involved and took control. It grew into a commercialized monster and overtook the serene community. Not just during the event, but every month of the year! Pre-contest, contest, and post-contest, it was a spreading disease that affected nearly every resident. They even changed the name of our town! No longer did I live in Lake Pleasant; now I lived in a town called Frosting! Horrible name. That was when I snapped. Can you blame me?
The year after the town changed its name, I got edgy. Weeks before the upcoming competition, it started again. Out came the flyers, the balloons, and the banners. I knew I had to stop the insanity. I could not live with it anymore. I would not allow them to push me out of my home.
So, I did what needed to be done. I eliminated the top competitor. It was one of the bakers responsible for turning the event into the ridiculous, crowd-filled spectacle it had become, so it was no great loss to the community.
They ignored my warning and continued to have the annual event, so the next year I had to step it up a notch. I disposed of the head of the festival committee. I thought that would allow the cake competition to return to its roots. Get rid of the over-the-top festival. I figured that would shut it down. It didn’t! They promoted the second-in-command. She was so thrilled to take over the position that she made things worse! Bigger, bolder, crazier.
Every year I try to send them a message that this cake competition needs to end. Eventually, I’ll get them to listen to me. I just need a better plan.
So, do you see? When these things happen, there’s good reasons behind them. Take a minute to ask yourself. What would I have done if I was faced with such a travesty?
