Piper Addison has three problems: a broken espresso machine, malfunctioning magic, and a dead body. Guess which one she doesn’t see coming?

One month from forty, Piper Addison thinks she finally has life figured out. Sure, her bank account could be fuller and the cafe she opened with the last of her savings could use some help, but what’s a few kinks for an Orchard Hollow witch?

Too bad Piper can’t witch to save her life, which is exactly what she might need to do when a dead body is discovered in the alley behind her cafe. To make matters worse, all the evidence points to Piper and the local sheriff is not too keen on the town’s paranormal inhabitants.

When a mysterious envelope lands on Piper’s doorstep, she has a decision to make: go behind the sheriff’s back and try to clear her name, or spend her fortieth birthday in a prison cell.

A Grave Roast is a paranormal cozy mystery complete with an unlucky witch, a ghost familiar, and a feisty raccoon with a talent for getting into sticky situations.

Why I Wrote a Paranormal Cozy

I have built an entire career around the paranormal. It seems that other than writing, my other passion is surrounding myself with all things magic. If I didn’t write the fantastical, I would likely have become a ghost hunter.

So, why magic?

It all started at a very young age, and I can’t pinpoint the exact date I became obsessed with life outside the ordinary. Perhaps it was all the times we moved when I was a kid or simply the need for magic; whatever it was, I was hooked.

I wrote my first ghost book when I was twelve and in case you were wondering, it was terrible. Though it did solidify my passion for ghosts and otherworldly creatures. While other kids played video games, I organized werewolf hunting committees and trips to cemeteries. In short, I was an odd child.

But here we are decades later, and the oddness never left.

Now, instead of daydreaming about magic, I create it.

When I decided to write as a career, I knew my stories needed fantasy elements and since I was so in love with the idea of accidentally stumbling on magic, I wrote it into my books. In all my mysteries, cozy or young adult, magic hides under the surface. You’d never know it by looking at the places and people I write about, but they are not what they appear to be. None of them.

It was because of this that I knew my first cozy mystery needed the magic it has. I couldn’t just write a sleuth—I needed to write a witchy sleuth. And her familiar couldn’t be a cat—she needed a ghost for a sidekick. Throw in a raccoon with his own chapter and you have yourselves a book I knew I could work with!

If you’re wondering what you’re getting into when you pick up A Grave Roast, know this: no matter what happens in the story, there will be magic.
