In a few minutes, the pilot lifted the aircraft off the ground.

The initial upward lurch forced her heart into her throat. Shutting her eyes, she registered the voice of the pilot filtering through the headset. Listening and discerning specific words was impossible over the thundering beat of her heart echoing in her ears. She pressed her lips into a flat line and breathed in through her nose. Warmth encircled her knee. She opened her eyes.

He rested a hand on her leg.

The simple touch started a chain reaction. She tightened her belly and sucked in a breath. From the side of her gaze, she regarded him and the soft smile lifting the corners of his mouth.

He removed his hand and pointed across her to the window.

Following his direction, she turned her head. The Juneau ice field stretched into infinity. Jagged rocky peaks burst through the thick blanket of snow. Under the sun, the light caught on the ice crystals and the frozen landscape sparkled like a sequin dress onstage. The helicopter flew over a section of the glacier with deep rivulets cracking the surface. Craggy blue ice appeared like a rare gem, the breadth of the expanse and depth of color almost unimaginable. Missing the scene of majesty before her would have been a lifelong regret. What would have happened if her family had taken the trip together?

If Dad was here, I wouldn’t have boarded the helicopter.

She dropped her shoulders. No one expected her as the shy unassuming daughter to escape her comfort zone. Greg didn’t know her well enough to trap her in the same circumstance.
