Why the Montgomery Sisters?

When I decided to write another western, I knew I wanted to do something with sisters. I didn’t know it at the time that these three very independent women would fill my thoughts with stories of strength, defiance, and perseverance. Each sister complimented the other with their attitude, force of nature, and in some cases demure.

Fern was the eldest, the responsible one having to raise her younger sisters, Poppy and Ivy after their father, a doctor had passed away. She was what we know today as a naturopath or herbalist. She cured ailments with plants, and herbs instead of the traditional medicine her father had used. She believed in the strong healing elements the earth offered and thus grew a large garden to supply the needs of the townspeople, but with a difference came judgment and she faced a lot of it.

Poppy was the wise-cracking quick with her gun’s sister, who’d rather live out in the wilderness than ever be stuck cooped up on the homestead. She was a sure shot with her colts, and even better with a shotgun. Denims and a button-down shirt were her attire, much to her sister, Ferns disapproval, but Poppy didn’t care. She went along to her own beat, and to heck with what anyone thought. A hired-gun, she treks down outlaws for their bounty, and no better woman for the job than this red-headed firecracker…until she gets herself arrested by a Pinkerton. Poppy has to face her insecurities and use her wits instead of her guns to get herself out of this one.

Ivy is facing some pretty tough dilemma’s in her story as well. Blind and under both her sister’s charge, she runs away only to be captured by a disgruntled Sioux renegade. She wants nothing more than to be independent and live a life of her own, but when she is faced with finding her way home, she soon realizes she cannot do it alone. Lakota Chief, Hotah is just what she needs. With his help, and stubborn nature, Ivy has no choice but to face the realities of a life with no sight, but with each gentle nudge from the Lakota Chief, Ivy begins to understand who she is and what she is capable of.

I loved writing each of these stories and getting to know the Montgomery sisters. With every curve in the road, these strong independent women were able to maneuver their way through with their heads held high, and a little bit of sass to go along with it
